Wednesday 21st Jan 2009 3-5.30 Unofficial Meeting

Happy New Year!!!

We fell in at 3pm and had patrols report strength and inspection. Some of us had to fall out as our socks were too low and others had to use the nailclippers that the PLs brought to cut their nails. After we fell out, we went to change out of our pinafores and took all our stationery and foolscap paper and went to an empty classroom. The PLs told all of us to bring our chairs to the front to sit.

Firstly, the PLs reminded us that FBTs were not allowed (only school shorts) and that we can only wear white-based school T-shirts. The CHIJ logo on our socks should be seen and our fringes are also not supposed to touch our eyebrows. The number of guides with long nails have also increased, therefore we will have to remember to cut our nails before guide meetings or we will be booked. If we have been booked thrice, we will have to look for Mrs Tan.

Secondly, the PLs covered the topic of discipline. We are a uniform group, and we have a standard. If we are unhappy about certain issues, we should not pull a face and complain and if we have any suggestions, we can tell the PLs, instead of showing a "black face". We should also respect our PSes, as they are older than us, and are our leaders. Therefore, we should not throw tantrum and show them black faces too. And when they tell us to do something, do not complain and make things difficult, as the PSes also have the responsibility to make sure all the things assigned to them are done.

Thirdly, we were also reminded of the ABCD. We should not keep complaining-directly and indirectly, and try to delay, because it will result in wasting more time as we will not be able to get things done. When we are given a task, just do it. The PLs have also set a rule: If we get out of hand, we will have to say in unison, "I will not A-argue, B-bargain, C-complain, D-delay." We should also learn to be more serious at times, and not keep playing. We should not talk back to our seniors too.

Forthly,we should remember to greet the PLs when we see them. We must also brush up on our cheers and knots, as the Sec 1s are joining us soon, and it would be quite embarrassing if we do not get our basics right, such as the squarelash. And when we tie our structures, we must take it seriously. When the Sec 1s come (next meeting), we will be having ice-breakers, so we must welcome them. :) We will also have to teach them to greet the teachers, seniors and PLs, introduce them to the ABCDs, and inform them that as a uniform group, there will be some form of discipline.

The next item is regarding attendance. If we have late days on Monday and Wednesday, please inform the PLs. Reasons such as tuition, piano lessons and dental appointments are not valid. If we do not wish to join guides, then we can quit, but it is not really advisable as all the LEAPS points will be gone-we can tell the PLs why we are unhappy with guides, and they will try to help us.

Regarding the LEAPS point system, as long as we have attained the gold badge, have at least 100 CIP hours, contribute to guides, stay committed at have at least 75% attendance, we can also get an A1 for our CCA- meaning that we do not necessarily have to hold leadership positions to do well in guides.

The next point: blogging. Even if we do not like guides, please do not blog about it, as it may hurt the feelings of another, and if it gets serious, it can be catagorised as cyberbullying, and the police can take action against you. Also, when we need to enter the den, we will have to receive permission from the PLs, and when we enter, just go in and do what we are asked to and leave, do not read whatever's on the board and search around.

Lastly, we are not advised to go on holidays, especially during March, as we still have guide meetings, and in June, as we will be having campfire preparations. Our current theme is "Shakesphere Masquerade".

After addressing all of us, the PLs requested to see those who are taking part in the Wee Kim Wee Challenge and the other activity which required us to take care of the elderly women. Joey told the Sec 2s to go home and complete Module 2.1,2.2 and 2.3 of Point 3-to research on five different types of flora and fauna found in Singapore, along with pictures and short write ups for each species. This is to be done individually.

Next, all those marching for Total Defence Day went out to practise, and after awhile the Red Cross leader joined us too. While we were practising, the rest of the COY were practising their footdrills. We also had patrol corners to come up with some cheers for our campfire. Then, we fell in. The PLs told us that what we did just now for the footdrills was the standard that we are supposed to have, and if we do not maintain that standard, we will have to keep practising. Next meeting will be next Wednesday, 3-5.30, Official Meeting. Oriole patrol will be in charge of the flag. Then,we fell out, thanked Ms Soh and the PLs, collected our wallets and went home.

Saturday 17th Jan 2009 7.55- 11.30 Unofficial

CCA DAY

We fell in at 7.55 in and changed out of our p.e attire. Some of us went to carry the structure poles while the rest of us went to the den. We had to carry 3 tables, 3 chairs, a tent, and lots of souvenirs and items to display.

We went to the field and pitched the tent. Next, we had to arrange the tables and chairs and place the items neatly for display. Some of us had to retie the seat for the for the swing, so went to the side and retied it, using snakelash. Joey also timed us. While we were retying the seat, the rest of the guides started tying the quads so that we could hang our banner accross.

As the Sec 1s were coming down soon from the hall after attending the talk, we were given 3 minutes to change into our guides uniform. We fell in and the PLs inspected us, making sure that our uniforms and hair were neat. We did a little bit of footdrill, and the PLs also told us how to promote guides, on how to answer the parents when they come and ask about guides etc. Dove and Flowerpecker patrol had to hang around near our guides station first, while the rest of us could roam around the school and give out souvenirs and promote guides. Then, after 1/2 hour, Kingfisher and Mynah would take over, followed by Oriole and Sparrow.

When the Sec 1s came, along with some parents, we all went to our respective areas. Many parents and students came to ask about guides, and Ms Lakshmi and Ms Soh were present too. We were given a chance to practise our oral skills and inform the parents on what activities we take part in and organise. We told them we usually meet up on alternate Mondays and every Wednesday, that we take part in lots of activities, including kayaking, dragon boating etc. We also organise campfires- such as the Sec 1 Orientation campfire, initiate combined camps and attend the campfires organised by other schools. To add on, we take part in competitions such as South Division Day, and we also have a lot of CIP opportunities.

After an hour or more, the Sec 1s and their parents started to leave, so we began to clear up. Some of us closed the quad, tidied the lashings, and transported the poles back while others took all the display items back to the den, and returned the tables and chairs. We also had to close the tent and comb the field, picking up the the litter left behind. After we were done, we fell in. The PLs told us that we had to sign up for CIP in groups of 4 at the Guide House. After we fell out, we had to sign up and then collected our wallets. We also had to help clean up the canteen before we left for home sweet home. :D

Yup, that's about it for now. Thanks :)

Hey :)

Wednesday 14th January 09 3- 5.30pm Unofficial Meeting

We fell in at 3pm and had patrols report strength and inspection. Mrs Tan came down and read to us the code of conduct for our school, and reminded us that our hair accessories can only be in black, white or dark blue, and also that we are only allowed to wear school p.e shorts during guides meeting (no more FBTs).

Next, we fell out and changed out of our pinafores. Today's agenda was CCA Day preparations. We had to take our pencil cases and wooden chopsticks and find an empty classroom to sit in. When all of us had settled down, we started on the preparations. We were divided into a few groups and each group were in charge of certain things, therefore, our preparations were organised and efficient.

Some groups were in charge of breaking the wooden chopsticks into smaller pieces, while others had to cut out flame-like shapes from red, orange and yellow pieces of construction paper. Another group had to stick the small pieces of chopsticks together to form the wood for the mini campfires, while another group had to stick the flames together. Some also helped to stick the fire onto the wood.

Apart from making mini campfires (and ending up with blisters and sticky fingers :) ), we also interacted with one another and bonded. Kai Ying also came to visit us. Then, as it was soon time to fall out, we cleaned up the classroom, picking up pieces of paper and wooden bits leftover from the chopsticks. We had to arrange the tables and chairs back in their original positions, and make sure that the classroom was spick and span, as a guide always leaves a place making sure that it is even cleaner than before.

At around 5.30, we fell in and listened to the announcements. For those of us who have signed up for the different courses, we have to be committed as our names will be given to the HQ, thus, if we are not able to make it on that certain day, we will have to strike our names off the list before it is taken down. Then we fell out, and had to run the entire length of the parade square- to and fro, as we had forgotten to thank Mrs Tan. After running, we thanked Mrs Tan, Kai Ying and the PLs, collected our wallets and went home. The PSes had to stay back as there were still some campfires that were incomplete, and we had to finish them up before we leave.

This Saturday (17th) is CCA Day, and we will have to report to school at 7.30am in p.e attire and pinafore and bring our guides uniform along too!

Join Guides! :D

Monday 12th January 09 2.30- 4.30 Unofficial meeting

The agenda for this meeting is mainly for us to study and pass our testings. We fell in at 2.30 and after that the PSes painted the Thinking Day banner while the rest were in the classroom studying. The Sec 2s and 3s had to form groups of 6- 7 to perform a skit in order to complete the Pt.1 Module 1.3- 1.5. After that, we had to fall in and run two rounds around the parade square as we were making too much noise. We also had to write on a piece of paper what testings we wanted to pass and hand it in to Joey on Wednesday.

Then we fell in, and listend to some announcements. If we have late days on the days we have guides meetings, we have to inform the PLs, and there is a sign up sheet for the ACS campfire. Then, we fell out, thanked the PLs, collected our wallets and went home.

Yup, that should be about it for now. x)

Wednesday 7th Jan 09 3- 5.30 Unofficial

Hey :)

Now that Sec One Orientation is now over, CCA Day is next on the list! (Join Guides! :D) Thus, yesterday's meeting was dedicated to CCA day preparations. We fell in at 3, and had patrols report strength and inspection. The PLs asked who had not eaten their lunch, and Mrs Tan came so we greeted her. Mrs Tan said we would only be allowed 15 minutes for lunch today as the meeting starts at 3(not 2.30) but still ends at 5.30, so we are already half an hour short. For the next meeting, those of us who have late days will have to eat a heavier recess, and buy or bring from home a sandwich or something, so that we would not have to beat the crowd in the canteen after school.

Then we fell out and changed out of our pinafores. The PSes had to work on our banner for Thinking Day while the rest had to proceed to an empty classroom with their stationary for CCA day prep. Our theme for Thinking Day 09 is "Stop the spread of AIDS, Malaria and other diseases", and we have to link it with another theme "Together we can save the world". So we sat down and started making measurements on the piece of black cloth. We drew a boarder and started sketching and drawing on the banner using chalk. Eunice came to help us for a while (thanks for the burnol! :D). Ms Soh also came and watched us for a while.

While we were working on the banner, the rest of the COY were inside the classroom. We are going to give out mini-campfires and stickers to promote guides on CCA day, so some of them were cutting rectangular pieces of coloured paper, and some in the shape of a fire, while others were decorating the stickers.

At around 5.25, we fell in and listened to some announcements while waiting for our wallets. We needed 4 Guides to take part in the Wee Kim Wee Challenge, and these 4 guides would have to plant some herbs (with the help from the COY too), and cook traditional meals with the herbs. We also needed some Guides to take part in another activity, where we would have to take care of some elderly women, cook for them etc. These activities will require our full committment. Lots of profiency badges would be earned by taking part in these activities, and all these would help in attaining our PNA award too.

Lastly, every patrol would have to contribute 10 pairs of wooden chopsticks each- the square ones, not the round ones. Next meeting would be on Monday, 2.30- 4.30pm, unofficial. Then Ms Soh arrived with the wallets and we fell out, thanked everyone, collected our wallets and went home. :D

Hello :)
Sorry for the rather late post...

Sec One Orientation Campfire!!!

Saturday 3 January 09 Unofficial 7.55-10.30

We fell in at 7.55 and had inspection and stuff. Ms Lakshmi came down and reminded us to be alert, ready for the campfire, and of course to do our best, because first impressions last! Then we fell out and took our bags to the 3rd floor classrooms, brought our water bottles and came down.

We went to our respective components to prepare for trial run later. Backdrop members hung the backdrop up, carried chairs and arranged them for the campfire later. The structure members started on their structures and the firepit members on their firepit. Qarissa collected the rags and newspapers that she told us to bring. Item members had to go up to the 5th level to transport the 8 stages (borrowed from our school band) down to the parade square.

We managed to transport the stages by the given time, and went to the den to collect our props. We took a rest and then started to rehearse. There were some technical difficulties at first, as the plug for the radio was spoilt, and we could not go to the AVA room to borrow another one, because there was a talk going on inside. So we practised without the music, and took occassional water breaks. Then, we went to the hall to practise, so that we could get used to performing on the stage if we needed to switch to the wet-weather plan later on. We rehearsed quite a few times. Tristina told us to treat these rehearsals like the real one, and reminded us to be more serious and to concentrate.

We took a break as we could not practise without the music. Our backdrop members happened to finish arranging the chairs in the hall too, so everyone gathered to bond (and gossip). We occassionally rehearsed and then when it was nearing our lunch break, we brought all our props to the parade square and then we fell in. Lunch was provided, so we went to the canteen and sat with our patrol members. After Mynah patrol said Grace, everyone tucked in. We were given one hour for lunch. After we were done, we fell in and the PLs told us to clean up the tables.

Next, we went back to the parade square to continue with our preparations. Backdrop members had to carry more chairs and the other components continued with their respective work. For item, we finally had a radio that could work, so we set about rehearsing properly. We practised for quite a while, and we also had to move the stages quite a few times, until we found the best arrangement.

Then we performed on stage and the backdrop and some other guides watched us. This was followed by a mini trial run, during which Mrs Tan came to watch us and helped us to improve. Mrs Tan commented on our performance and gave suggestions on how we could improve. For our dance at the end of the skit, especially "Caritas", we had to spread out so that we would not worry about bumping into one another. When we jumped during the chorus for Caritas, we should not jump half-heartedly but give a big star jump. Everyone also had to memorise the lyrics for Caritas and One Family, and we had to sing really loudly. Mrs Tan gave us until 3pm to practise, after which she would come and see how much improvement we have made.

So we gathered together to learn the lyrics of both the songs. We were familiar with "One Family", but needed help with "Caritas", and the backdrop members joined in and helped us. We made sure everyone, especially the Sec 2s, were word perfect and could sing loudly. Thus, we rehearsed countless times. At around 3, Mrs Tan went to the area near the HOD room on level 2, and we had to move all the way back to the St. Michael block to sing. The distance was rather long, and all of us had cooperate and sing as loudly as possible. We sang One Family and Caritas twice, one with the actions and one without. The backdrop members were sitting at the side and cheering us on. With the cooperation of everyone and the encouragement from the backdrop members, we sang extremely loudly, and most importantly, Mrs Tan could hear us too. Then we had to move nearer to where Mrs Tan was and individually do a big star-jump for her. Everyone did their best and no one had to retry. Yay! :)

After our "accomplishment", we went for a water break to replenish the water that we lost and to soothe our throats. Then we sat down with the backdrop members and played games. We had a lot of fun, and most importantly, we managed to bond and to get to know one another better. Then, everyone had to proceed to the stage for a trial run with the emcees, and Mrs Tan came to watch our performance.

At around 5, we went to the canteen for dinner. We had to finish our dinner as soon as possible and then change into our guides uniform, tidy ourselves up to prepare for the campfire. Then we fell in and Mrs Tan came to remind us to give our best and encouraged us. After we fell out, those who were supposed to guard the bridge went to the structure, and those who were in charge of ushering got ready. Our seniors came, and everyone greeted them. For us item members, we were starting to feel rather nervous, and Eliza came over to reassure us.

After awhile, the parents and a few of the sec one classes started arriving. When all the classses were present, and most of parents had arrived, the campfire started. Tristina and Joey got everyone started by practising the Adiji Yell, which was quite successful. Then Mrs Lee, our Principal, arrived and declared the campfire open. We sang "Campfire's burning" and this was followed by a few other songs and cheers. Next up was the game "Scavenger Hunting", which required classes to bring up the items that was mentioned as soon as possible. The Sec ones were rather enthusiastic, and the next game "Can you rember the lyrics" was also one of their favourite. The game ended with everyone singing "Apologise".

The classes also went onstage to perform, and some of the items were really funny. After many cheers and songs, it was finally time for our Guides Item. We did our upmost best, performing to the best of our abilities, bearing in mind what Mrs Tan told us earlier on. It went pretty well, and everyone swayed and put their hands around each other when we sang "Caritas" and "One Family". When we reached the song "Hold on to our dreams", all the guides went onstage, and it was really nice and touching. Then, after the song, we went offstage and together with the emcees, the campfire was declared close. Whoosh! There were some announcements, and we had to fall in. Our seniors came and gave us their comments; Ashleigh felt that we really improved alot as compared to the last meeting, and Eliza reminded us that although the campfire was a success, we should not be complacent, but most importantly, remember the process that we went through during our preparations- which was quite shaky, and try to improve on it next year. Mrs Tan also came and told us that we did a good job- each and everyone of us did our part well. Then we fell out and got ready to shower, and those who were not staying over were dismissed.

After we showered, we had to write our entry for our logbooks and we had some light refreshments. The Guides Com had COH and then it was lights out, time to crash into our sleeping bags after a long, tiring but exciting and fruitful day.

Sunday 4 January 09 7.30

We fell in at 7, and moved our bags to the canteen. Then it was time for breakfast. After that, we had to return our wallets and the PSs fell in as the PLs were not there. After we fell out, we had to get to our respective components to clear up. The item members helped those in backdrop to stack up all the chairs and put them back to the original places. A human chain was formed, so we were quite systematic and efficient. The firepit girls also came along to help. After the chairs were cleared, all the other components had cleaned up too, so we had finally managed to BREAK THE RECORD and go home at 10! :D We took around 2 hrs and 40 min. Then we fell in, listened to some announcements, collected our wallets and home sweet home!

This Sec One orientation- the preparations and the campfire itself, has certainly served as a learning journey for all of us. We have learnt new skills, managed to showcase our talents in different ways, and perhaps, even discovered certain talents that we actually possess. We have learnt to work together, not just as a patrol or a component, but as a whole COY, helping one another, encouraging and supporting each other. Through the whole process of preparation, we have faced many obstacles, and managed to learn how overcome them.

Perhaps unknowingly, we have also incorperated many values such as patience, persistance, teamwork and cooperation. We have learnt to work hard, to give our best in all that we do, so that we will be able to enjoy the fruits of our labour, and to feel a sense of accomplishment when all is done. Most importantly, we have bonded with one another and made new friends. We have shown the whole school; teachers, parents and students, our Guiding spirit and the meaning of a true blue IJ girl! Well done, everyone! :D

"The IJ spirit's living on,
it's stretching far and far beyond,
it's never gonna die,
it's gonna live in EACH OF US,
and we will keep it burning, burning strong,
the flame of zest lies in us all along,
always inspiring us, TO GO ON!!!" :)
